Land Use Constraints Data
Landmark, in conjunction with an urban and regional planning consultant, has developed a standardised Land Use Constraints dataset. This dataset covers the whole of Great Britain and is updated on a regular basis.
The information is derived from the development plans published by Local Authorities across Great Britain and, to ensure consistency and ease of use, has been divided into eleven standardised Level 1 categories which have been defined as follows:
- Housing
- Transport
- Open Land
- Heritage Environment
- Town Centre and Retailing
- Industrial and Commercial
- Community and Social
- Waste, Pollution, Minerals, Water and Energy
- Rural/Settlement
- Boundaries
- Other Areas/Sites

How is Land Use Constraints Data used?
Each Level 1 category is divided into a number of Level 2 sub-categories.
The data can be provided in bulk or by individual Level 1 categories. In some instances individual level 2 categories can be provided.
The geography of the data is supplied as polygons, lines and points, in MapInfo or ESRI Shape file format, with the following attributes attached:
- Data source - title and date of the development plan
- Plan status - the status at which the plan is e.g. deposit, adopted
- Land use class - as specified by the Local Authority
- Landmark standardised land use categories - levels 1 and 2 (see table below)
- Summary of associated policy information - reference, chapter and heading
