Historical Land Use

The Historical Land Use report is derived from the physical analysis of over 60,000 Ordnance Survey map sheets at 1:10,000 and 1:10,560 scale, dating from the middle of the nineteenth century to the late twentieth century.

Landmark's analysis has identified over 390,000 features in Britain from which a unique database of industrial and geographical land use has been created.

The Historical Land Use section incorporates features which have been identified from a comparison of two or more map editions. For example it can indicate such features such as quarries and pits which were once in existence but have since been infilled.

Historical Tanks and Energy Facilities have been identified from text on OS historical maps and categorised into 9 types of information: Tanks, Potential Tanks, Petroleum Storage Facilities, Oil Industry Facilities, Gas Industry Facilities, Gas Monitoring Facilities, Electricity Industry Facilities, Electrical Sub Station Facilities, Miscellaneous Power Facilities.

For this section of the report 1:1250 and 1:2500 scale mapping between 1946 and 1996 has also been analysed.
